About the Event
Each summer, New Mexico Guardianship Association brings together national and local speakers to educate professional and family guardians and conservators about their duties, process, challenges, resources, and standards of practice. This year, the morning program will focus on the media's portrayal of guardians and combating perceptions by practicing according to NGA standards, exploring how to root out and prosecute bad guardians, and concluding with a discussion of the Revised NMGA Handbook: A Standards Based Approach to New Mexico Law. The afternoon program will include a panel discussion of incorporating person-centered decision making in everyday practice, breakout sessions regarding best practices in setting up a professional guardianship business, the intersection of public benefits to enable guardians to advocate for benefits the protected person is entitled to, resident’s rights and protecting from illegal and unsafe discharge, implementing the review and monitoring provisions of HB 234. The 2021 Symposium will conclude with a recap/discussion of the Fourth National Guardianship Summit that was held virtually on May 13-15, 2021
